Hi Stackers,
As promised in last week’s “What’s next” post, I’m sharing my answers to the questions on the 2025 Stacker Survey, which I’d really love for y’all to fill out so I can get to know everyone a bit better.
It’s a bit awkward, answering questions meant for others, but let’s see how I do.
How do you prefer I address you? Please include your preferred name and pronouns. Mine are she/her.
Emilie Staat Strong is my chosen name for my artistic endeavors. Now that I’ve been using it for a few years, I get addressed this way and even get mail addressed to my “chosen” name, which is really cool. It’s not my legal name, but I’m “doing business as” (d.b.a.) Emilie Staat Strong/Staat Strong Productions. I still remember when my creative friends started referring to me as Emilie Staat Strong - it helped me take the new name seriously and start considering it as my “real” name. My pronouns are she/her, as I say above.
What convinced you to subscribe to my Substack newsletter?
Well, this one is a little weird for me to answer, but I am subscribed to my own newsletter. I get the emails that you get, which helps me see how the post turned out. It’s pretty much housekeeping for me to be subscribed, but it also serves as an archive, of sorts, separate from Substack.
Do you read other Substack newsletters? Tell me if you think I'd like any, please! :)
I’ve subscribed to a lot of Substacks, so I can see what other creatives are doing. And, of course, on my main page, you can see the Substacks that I’m recommending: Sitting in Silence by Maurice Carlos Ruffin, CRONE ENERGY by Ronlyn Domingue, Mary McMyne’s newsletter, Sketchbooks & Scratchpads by Daniel José Older and Writing Away by Lavinia Spalding. These are friends and mentors of mine and I really enjoy keeping up with what they’re doing.
Have you read anything in my newsletter you particularly enjoyed - do tell, if so!
This one is all y’all! Though I do love when I get so caught up in writing something to y’all that I lose track of time.
Is there anything I've mentioned you'd like to know more about?
There’s plenty I’d like to do more research on. I’d really love to dive deep on some of the topics I’ve written casually about - like race and Survivor (there are some interesting-looking papers about it). I’d like to do more posts about perspective in various books, too.
Are you a reader? What genres or authors do you enjoy?
I’ve written quite a bit about this here. :)
What's a piece of media you'd like to recommend to me? Book, comic (webcomic), podcast, tv show, movie, music, etc.?
I’m about to write about this on Thursday - I saw a few movies I’d like to talk about with y’all, including Sinners.
Do you have a project you'd like to tell me about? Would you like me to share this with my readers?
Again, it feels crazy considering everything else going on, but I’m shooting a short film later this year (hopefully in July). This is going to be such a fun opportunity to bring together friends and community members.
In fact, would you be interested in doing either an interview with me for the Substack or would you like to write a "takeover" post during the summer months?
I would very much like to do interviews with folks or have y’all “takeover” the Substack during the summer. Let me know if that’s something you’re into!
How do you feel about summer?
I wrote about this last week, if you haven’t had a chance to read that Substack post yet.
Now it’s YOUR turn to fill out the 2025 Stackers Survey. I’ll be the only one reading your answers, unless you’d like to turn the survey into a takover post. :)
